How we redesigned profile management & settings for independent educational consultants while building CollegePlannerPro's first design system

Who is CollegePlannerPro?
CollegePlannerPro is a SaaS platform for Independent Higher Educational Consultants to manage their business and collaborate with their students.
Project Overview
CollegePlannerPro is the leading software in their industry but the platform’s UI is outdated and falls short of certain accessibility standards. As a new, younger wave of independent educational consultants joins the industry, they expect the software they use to be sleek, modern, and professional. I partnered with CollegePlannerPro to refresh the UI of their platform and build the foundations of their first design system to meet the needs of emerging consultants.
One of the first steps in our roadmap was redesigning user profile settings. The old profile settings page displayed everything in one page which contributed to cognitive overload and difficulty locating specific settings.

We decided to add a side navigation menu to organize each setting into its own page. This is a familiar pattern for software settings and drastically decreases cognitive load.
Redesigned profile settings
While redesigning the user profile settings, I built out a reusable component library in Figma using the design foundations we solidified at the start of the project. These foundations directly addressed any existing accessibility issues by ensuring text size is readable and color usage passes WCAG requirements. I added components like button, form fields, tooltips, modals, alerts and more to CollegePlannerPro’s design system, working closely with the Head of Engineering to implement them.
Outcome
The redesigned user profile settings looks & feels more like a modern software which should help not only newer consultants but also existing ones to find and update account information as needed.
