Rupa Health's Patient Portal
How we improved the security & design of Rupa's patient portal

Who is Rupa Health?
Rupa Health is a platform that helps functional medicine practitioners order, track, and manage results from 30+ different lab companies with 3000+ tests in one interface.
Project Overview
Rupa’s patient portal was initially designed to provide clear status updates and instructions for patients after their practitioners ordered lab tests via Rupa.
But the portal lacked some standard security measures at login & signup. We also learned from practitioner feedback that patients were oftentimes confused while using the portal. Lab order statuses weren’t correct and test instructions weren’t clear, so patients reached out to practitioners for clarification. This frustrated practitioners because Rupa is supposed to save them time with labs.
Our Approach
Mobile-first design was vital for this project since the majority of patients accessed their portals on their mobile devices. I worked alongside the Head of Design to ensure the flow from account creation to viewing ordered lab tests in the portal was seamless and followed Rupa’s brand voice and visual direction.
Because we also needed to improve the security of the patient portal login & signup flow, I collaborated closely with engineers on form UX and behavior. This involved a lot of back and forth about password fields, specifically when and where to throw errors to ensure a smooth experience. I appreciated how quickly we were able to iterate on this step of the project.

Outcome
We released a mobile-friendly patient portal with drastically improved security measures and a modular design foundation that easily allowed for more features in the future, such as tracking lab test results and booking blood draw appointments. Patients are able to easily check lab order status, refer to the portal for specific lab test instructions and feel confident that they can complete the test without contacting their practitioner.
